More work on the Masters, with success!
Resetting CMOS then configuring properly with the Welcome disc solved
the boot problem - both 512s now read the DOS disc directly at startup
with no hesitation. Must be something to do with the Tube
initialisation. Next is to try and get the ABC-310 behaving enough to
see if the Master 512 DOS discs will work with it.

Mouse: Tested thoroughly with both 512 and AIV, and no movement.
Trackball moves pointer with *trackerball, but *mouse gets nothing,
static pointer. Buttons click though. Any ideas? Cable/soldering all
looks fine, internally there are metal things for counting movement
which look clean - either magnetic or something else? Slightly
disappointed, since I wanted this kit partly for the mouse, but I guess
these things will fail. Any ideas where I should look? I'm wondering if
it's short of power or something, assuming the switches are just
switches on the user port.

In other news: 'new' SCSI HD from eBay has brought the PC back, Belkin
ADSL modem/router has solved plague of network issues I've had for
eons; and it's relatively secure, plus now all the wireless computers
are 54Mb instead of 11Mb.
