Are you issuing the right sound commands (e.g. SOUND
-1, 160, 0, 0) ? You may also need to 'tune' VR2 so
that the voice sounds 'right' (or wrong, whichever
you prefer ...).

The ashtray certainly doesn't need to be wired up
for speech to work.
