So redirect the DNS for the site to a homepage with a message saying
that the site is temporarily down due to *somebody* threatening legal
action against the University. (I'm no expert on legal matters, but
launching a smear campaign against this chap will likely not help the
University any - if they don't share and endorse your views then at
least put a disclaimer on your posts!)

Wouter, you seem like a decent chap, but you said you piece before, you
said you'd made your last post on the matter, and to be honest Mr.
Thornley is not the person who comes out looking bad when you post a URL
to a website that personally attacks him :-)
