While we're on the topic, the drives usually supplied with Electron upgrades
where 3.5". The Electron (in the 
Plus 3 and most things after, I believe there were some DFS 8271 things beforehand)
used the WD1770 from day 
one.

The register that sets the WD1770 control lines (i.e. which drive is enabled,
whether in single or double density 
mode) is identical to that on the BBC B+.

>From this can we not conclude that a WD177x BBC should be able to use a
3.5" drive without any trouble, and if 
not then getting hold of whatever differences lie between the B and B+ in
the drive controller area will solve the 
problem?
