Maybe this is not helpful, but you could have easily
done that with GoMMC ... Copying all the data off the
HD would have been done in a jiffy. Supposing it's not
too large (i.e. 256 or 512 MB-ish, I've spotted the
occasional 1GB MMC card, but only for deep pockets).

Come to think of it, GoMMC would be ideal for backing
up any HD or 'large' filing system, attached to BBC
or Master.
