Subject: BBC Master broken?

Has my BBC Master broken, or does it just need a new battery pack? 

It hasn't been used for about 2 years, and I just got it out again, but it is
giving the following message:

then a * prompt, all on a 20-column display. 

The battery pack has leaked - could this be the cause of the problem? (I've
disconnected and removed the pack now.)
