I can't see anything wrong with the code.  Does FF or FE always turn
into the same wrong value when it's the last byte of the second-last
sector?  And no other values do this?  Not FA or FC etc?  I'm thinking
about missing clocks and wondering if the error is on the read or the
write, though all the interesting stuff like that is done by the
integrated drive electronics and should be transparent.  Does it happen
with more than one drive?
