The latter would be useful.
5.25" floppy drives tend to be pretty configurable too via jumpers, so
it may be you have a drive set up for a different system. In particular,
isn't there something odd like PC drives are always jumpered for drive
1, support two drives only, and rely on the cable twist - whilst the
rest of the world jumpers them for the actual ID (0 - 3) and don't use a
twisted cable?
The advanced disk user guide's worth getting from the bbcdocs site if
it's on there, ISTR there's a section in there on the different drives /
disks / controllers / BBC switch settings...
(Got to go out in a sec or I'd pull my copy off the shelf!)
