Subject: Re: Picture and thumbnail sizes
I've written a small program with BBC BASIC for Windows that
recusively scans my pictures directories and identifies those that
aren't already thumbnails and passes the names of the pictures to
a thumbnail generator. I'm currently testing it with EasyThumb.
Some of the results are on my site. I haven't uploaded all the
full-size pictures yet.
mdfs.net/pics/2004/11 full upload
mdfs.net/pics/2005/01 full upload - IDE PCB pictures :)
mdfs.net/pics/2005/05 thumbnails only
mdfs.net/pics/2005/06 thumbnails only - assembled IDE interface :)
This has reminded me of the other problem The thumbnails are
around 4K - nice and small, and fairly clear. However, the
original pictures are 700K-800K. I don't want to throw away the
highest quality scans and images that I have, yet I also don't
want to force people to have to download 800K of data just to get
a closer look at a picture.
So, I'm thinking of a browsable structure that has two thumbnails
for each picture - something 128x96 pixels 4K size displayed on
the index page, something bigger, to "zoom" in to a picture, but
still sensibly small in filesize, and the raw original.
With what looks like an average of 700K per picture I think I'm
going to need more server space to upload the public pictures.
I've already half-filled a CD with the small number I've done so
far.
