It was merely an end of school prank, no permanent harm was done and they
did see the funny side of it eventually, these were also only the master's
in the IT dept, we did have quite a few others.

If I had known he couldn't have fixed them, I of course, would never have
done it in the first place.

These stories have always puzzled me. The whole point of having
access to the computer room was having access to the computer
room. Why on earth would somebody willingly shoot themselves in
the head by doing something that removed their access to the very
facilities that they wanted to use?
