The BBC B would also need to have ADFS (and 1770 disc controller) to be able
to boot the weird part-ADFS-part-DOS boot disc.

I also wonder whether GEM made use of the improved VDU command set on the
Master IO processor to improve the speed of the GEM apps? 

But to answer in a word, no, I've never heard of an 80186 copro being used
with a BBC B,
