Thanks guys,
Will give the strip a clean in warm soapy water as described. Sadly I wasn't
the one that removed the protective cover, but judging by this example it
must have been done recently (doh!).

Hi Aaron
I have a BBC B+ in lovely condition, also with the protective strip over
the plastic function key cover. I thought it was so rare I kept it on !
:-) If you want to remove it though, try soaking the plastic strip in
slightly warm soapy water and wipe with kitchen towel or a non-abrasive
soft cloth.
