Well, actually, knowing how it works I would. Especially since I've
often used it, as have many others. As I wrote, it's a common method
amongst those who preserve old microcomputer tapes (not just from
Beebs).

That's a bad idea for several reasons.
First problem with that is that WAV covers a multitude of sins, and not
all systems can decode all WAV files. If you stick to basic forms like
the original WAV format (which was essentially a byte-swapped version
of the existing AIFF standard) all the standard tools can use it.
Then, if you want compression, use AIFC or one of the standard
compression schemes built into WAV, not an external type. Lastly, it's
not what people are already doing.
