Hmm well it was error 03 he told me... but he said it was displayed on
screen rather than him needing to read a value from anywhere. That's
possibly something like "not ready, unrecoverable" or something because
the player's failed start-up diags.

I got him to check the player's built-in diags and it was giving error
53, which is an error from the slide drive sensor (equivalent to track 0
sensor on a floppy). Either it's broken or dirty, out of alignment,
associated circuitry has failed, or the slide drive motor control
circuitry's fallen over and the head's not moving at all...

Bloke's on holiday for two weeks now but I'll go over and take a look
when he's back. This player seems to be an early one (with Philips demo
player written underneath) so I'm hoping the guts match up reasonably
well with the schematics!

cheers

Jules
