Interesting. Are you saying that there are Econet modules available which
use Z80 SIO's? I've never heard of them....

Agreed. The reason I was going for the pre-built modules was that IMHO
soldering SMD devices to PCB's can be a b*tch. If anyone can tell me how to
do this relatively easy at home, then I'd go for the directly-mounted-to-PCB
parts as well.

Indeed that shouldn't be a problem. uC's are widely available in all shapes
an sizes.
