It's worth asking local schools / colleges, and at least saying that if
they're throwing out any electronics or computing stuff that you'd be
interested. Local newsgroups are useful too, as is any local freecycle
list that you might have.

With those last two, it's particularly handy if you know what you need -
just ask, and usually someone has something they no longer need. Plus of
course this mailing list's relevant if it's for a BBC-related project.
It doesn't hurt to ask.

I've never used EBay before so I don't know how easy it is for buying
components. Probably not very good.
