Ah yes, my sluggish brain hadn't worked the scenario through as far as 
putting the sound back onto tape for the original machine! I still think 
it would be better sticking to WAV or a compression fromat considerably 
less lossy than MP3. In fact, given the unique nature of the sound, I'm 
sure a custom built sound compression format could be developed which 
would be quite efficient. Possibly help to reduce noise too if the sound 
was recorded from a hissy tape?
