The International Standards Organisation (ISO) have defined a seven layered
model of network communication in an attempt to set an international
standard:

Since in an ECONET system Acorn Computers Ltd are responsible for all bar
the Application level, it was appropriate to combine ISO layers in the
ECONET design, such that it is a three-layered network with each layer
system-independent of the others:
