Don't trust it (the printer).
 
Ideally, when shopping you should take a portable computer with a
known Centronics printer port, plug it in to the printer of
interest and try sending a text file to it.
 
COPY \AUTOEXEC.BAT PRN: will do it on a DOS/Windows thing. I would
take my Amstrad Notepad and do VDU 2:PRINT "HELLO":V.12,3 on it ;)
