I think this was a deliberate move, to maximise floppy reliability, and
also to drive network managers screaming to their nearest Acorn dealer
to plonk down the wonga for a hard disc :)

There's no reason the drives couldn't be operated much faster as far as
I can see.  The physical units are high quality Sony drives (of course,
FileSnore was produced in the years before the quality of Sony stuff
turned to shit.)

I have a feeling the floppy access speed is set by jumpers on the
FileSnore main board.  You'd need to take a look at the cct diagrams.
