Subject: 101 uses for a speech system (number 62)
Hi,
Caller display has been around for about 10 years now as digital exchanges
got installed the coverage increased. Just recently, for BT at least, the
service is now free (other service providers may charge a nominal fee per
quarter), so why not use your beeb to log all those missed calls?
This has the advantage that you're not restricted to only having one call
stored by dialling "1471", multiple call numbers times and dates can be
stored.
To save having to connect up a monitor (ie.the beeb can be left on
permanently as it has no fan so runs silently) the speech system can be used
to announce missed numbers on demand.
First you need to make a caller ID unit on stripboard, details at
http://www.sprow.co.uk/bbc/buildit.htm#Callerid
along with datasheet and schematic and article.
If there is sufficient interest I could probably get some PCBs made
(estimate of £15 each, probably need about 8-10 interested parties), but it
isn't that difficult to make on stripboard. Note however that the photo
looks a bit daunting because I didn't have many suitable resistor values!
The software is described there too in file
http://www.sprow.co.uk/bbc/software/manuals/clidusr.txt
it's a MODE 7 application with setup screens and a carousel of the 100 most
recent callers.
One other thing to note is "PROCspeakqty", which is a handy routine to speak
the numbers 0 to 100, taking into account the oddities of english such as
numbers greater than 10 not all being "teens".
