I thought the only valid parameters for FDRIVE were 0-3.  What do
4-7 do?

Interesting - I have a 3.5" and a 5.25" drive on mine. Prior to my
tinkering with the FDRIVE setting, both worked ok. 

So FDRIVE 5 must be the only correct setting for this arrangement.
