The seller sent me another board. I tried it in a different Master but 
same results - burning smell and no ROMs listed.

I've actually identified where the burning is coming from - the 
CD74HCT139E chip on the cartridge board.  Does anyone have any knocking 
about?  CPC sell them for 38p but I think I'll need to place a £5 
minimum order.

The good news, however, is that the ROMs and EPROMs are still ok, 
despite glowing like 100W light bulbs!
