They were manufactured by a company in Chadderton (a couple of 
miles away from BeebMaster Towers) and branded as Flippy Discs.  I
don't know if I have any left but as I remember, they had index holes
at either side of the hub ring and a write protect notch at both sides
so you could literally turn them over and use both sides.

Yes, that's the term! Never tried them myself, though. Did you cut both the 
write-protect notch and the index holes, or just the notch? I should imagine it 
would be quite fiddly to cut the index holes.
