It's now coming back to me (eeeeek!)

It was these Banana discs which I somehow managed to get 4 sides' worth 
of storage on.  I can only assume it was some slight (1/2 of an 80-track 
  track width) difference in alignment between the heads on the two 
sides, causing the tracks to interleave, so flipping the disc and 
reformatting meant not only did I not lose any data, but got 800K in DFS 
mode, and 1280K in ADFS L format... as if the two ways up were totally 
independent of one another.
