When I was looking into how the speech system worked, I remember
it being rather complicated. It is a serial ROM rather than a paged ROM
and even getting it to speak words other than the built-in words
and word parts by making them up from the raw words sounds involved
a lot of calculation and you had to read the bytes in reverse order.

I have a couple of "empty" (presumably) TMS6100 chips but I've no idea
how to get the Phrase ROM data into them.

Best wishes,

Ian

>From what I remember of the original speech ROM, they were in a special
serial format ROM with a four bit address and serial output. I've never seem
a dump of one, they were mask programmed, not an EPROM or Flash. The funny
socket that originally fitted into the 'ash tray' on a B was going to be for
programs supplied in the same format. I don't think any were made.

Sprow has a neat upgrade:

I still have an original speech system running somewhere on a BBC I
converted into a talking voltmeter, (long story - I couldn't look at the
test points and a meter on a somewhat dangerous industrial repair).
