Subject: Modulator Interference & 3.5 HD disk drive
Finally got my sony MPF920 3.5 HD disk drive working on a model b. Not
totally sure what my earlier problems were, would like to try and bottom
this out.
When I first tried with this drive on a model b, the drive would power up
and would usually get disk fault when trying to access the drive. What was
odd is that there would be some really bad interference on the tv modulator
,
when trying to access the drive. With white lines accross most off the
screen only when trying to access the drive, I experienced the same on thre
e
different model bs. Sadly on my friends model b, the modulator is not able
to keep a signal anymore, seemed fine beforehand.
I tried for weeks with no success, I then borrowed a watford 3.5 drive buil
t
for bbc. When I connected the watford drive, it worked first time with the
1770 controller, and can read the catalog on 8271 controller, as
expected Whats more with this drive, I got none of the bad modulator
interference.
I then reconnected the sony drive, and got the same problem accessing the
drive, with bad interferrence on the modulator. I just kept repeating *CAT
on the machine, and after several attempts it just sprang into life, with n
o
interference. Since then I have had no problems accessing the drive. Not
sure what the intial problems were, but I think the sony drive thought it
was talking to a pc, and tried to communicate on the newer protocol.
Having now used this drive for a couple of weeks, looks like the modulator
is going on my machine. Could be coincidence I guess, but just seems odd I
got really bad interference on the modulator trying to access the drive
intially, and two bbc micros I have mostly used with this drive are now
having problems with the tv modulator.
Just wonder if anyone can shed any light on this one.
Regards,
Paul.
