I always had good results by placing the PCB on a flatbed scanner, a black
or white piece of cloth over the back and press the scan button. Could get
some fantastic resolution to check tracks and zoom in around components!

Obviously not always possible with PCBs still mounted, but a very easy
alternative :-)
