I first met this argument at Wakefield BBC Micro User Group (as was 
then), when we had a rather lively debate over disc vs disk. ISTR the 
outcome was that "disk" was Americanised, and "disc" was the British spelling.

Crumbs, that must have been around 1986. Scarey stuff.
