Except that the original Greek is (as near as you can get with a Roman
alphabet!) "diskos".  "discus" is a purely English word meaning a
particular object used in a throwing sport.

Isn't "nite" still regarded as a mid-20th century slang variant?
 Perhaps not, now, but I don't have a reasonably recent American
dictionary to check.
