I used to have machines named after Trumpton/Camberwick Green characters
Then super cars, Greek Gods, villages around Cambridge, Cambridge Colleges,
elements from the periodic table (stuck with that)
Now it's Noble Gases for the dev boxes, Oxford Blue and Cambridge Blue for
the servers (Oxford for staging of course) and my two main computers; tower
is called HAL and the laptop is called SAL. The media machine is called
DinglyDell - has all my DVDs/CDs and TV on it, then there is Obelisk (PS2)
and Coffin (XBox) and Cube (GC) - I had a Linux box inside a cheese wedge
and that was called CheeseWedge until it died.
A few years ago, I bought a wad of Dell PowerEdge 8450 (8 way 550MHz P3
Xeon) and 6450 (4 way 550MHz Xeon) boxes, thought it would be cool to have
my own server rack. I ran seti@... for a month or so, then I casually
looked at my electricity meter to see how much extra power I was using.
OHMIGOD - they were basically using 12kWh, for a month - 8,640kWh - my
electricity bill for a quarter was over £700 !!! Sold those on for a hefty
profit, it easily covered the bill. Just made me think a little more about
how many boxes I have on at a time!
