Just to add to Sprow's info. I wrote up my findings after trying 
various different methods of connecting a BBC to a Linux box.
 
My cable is (roughly) the same as the one on Sprow's site (others
suggest different methods which don't work so well with the PC). 
 
There are a few test programs there which may be of help
