I'm referring to the multiple large receive (and send, though its
possible to cheat on sends) buffers. Not "routines", as so clumsily
typed above.

I can't remember what the licencing hit would be with a
zmodem-compatible protocol. Zmodem itself is IIRC free for noncommercial
use. Where a compatible might stand, if it drew no code from the
original, but was a seperate but compatible protocol, I don't know.

There is also an arguement for making it incompatible! Load/Exec address
preservation springs to mind. "both ways" is my usual preference.
