Another thought I had was that as all my machines are running Econet
there could be some sort of network interrupt which occasionally
interferes with the disc interface.

I have had this happen occasionally, and as you say it is usually when 
formatting. It is not frequent or predictable enough to find out whether it 
is a software bug, a hardware fault or something like a power glitch.
