Originally designed by Acron. Pace usually sold the serial cartridge 
packaged with a Pace Nightingale - which is how I got my first modem.

Probably because like the Acron designed version they are based on the 
2681 for one very good reason ... the driver code for the 2681 is in the 
Plus 1 ROM - it was the officially "sanctioned" UART (it's actually a 
DUART) for the Electron.
