You need to snoop the serial port to find out what's going on - connect
up the RxD/TxD/GND lines to another Beeb and run a simple program to
display data flowing in and out of the serial port.

I wouldn't have thought it would work like that. I'd have expected
LPDFS to translate "*." into the appropriate PR1ME command ("ls", for
example.) The output from "*." looked like a standard *nix directory
listing if I remember correctly.
Try searching the LPDFS rom using the *nix tool 'strings' and see what
it finds.
