Ah!  I was using DISK to format 720K DOS discs, although I don't 
appear to have had any problems.  The only reason for this
is that W****ws XP refuses to allow me to format a disc to 720K.  I
like the way it is really helpful and versatile: you get a choice of 1.44MB
or 1.44MB or 1.44MB....

Just as an aside, do not use the Master 512's DISK.CMD program to format 
720kb (or 360kb) disks. It has a bug in it which writes the system area 
wrongly (see 
http://www.cowsarenotpurple.co.uk/bbccomputer/master512/problems.html#format). 
Make sure the formatting is done on a PC, or use a different program.
