Joel,

if this is for the BBS project then now would be a really good time for people 
to be worrying about how to attach a 512 bytes/sector SCSI disk to the Acorn 
SCSI controller. It'll make your life so much easier both for backup (because 
the drive will hook straight up to a PC) and for reliability.

multi-GB SCSI disks existed back in the 80's (full height, of course), so you 
wouldn't necessarily be using components that weren't available then.
