Yes, I have checked the termination. I had to buy a SCSI terminator
that plugs into the port at the back of the E40S. Before that I
attached a second hard drive to the back of the E40S with on-board
terminators and that did the trick. If the bus isn't terminated then
the E01S won't start up, it just seems to crash. With the terminator
the FileStore starts up and goes into User mode but only the floppy
discs are present.
It's as if the drive in the E40S has somehow been disabled, but I
don't know how or how to reverse it.

The filestores are SCSI aren't they? I assume you have checked
termination and drive numbering on the E40S ?
