AFAIK 40T drives have a wider head than 80T drives, so even if you could
find a way of halving the step you'd be overwriting the adjacent track
anyway. That said, there might be the odd 80T drive jumpered to 40T for
those markets that need 40T and can't handle a 40/80 switch (e.g.
education), if these exist, they are probably rare.
