The terminator needs power to work.  This power source, called TERMPWR
can come from  the SCSI bus or from any attached device.  It usually
comes from the SCSI controller (in the E01S in your case) and is
protected by a fuse and a diode.  This fuse can blow if the SCSI bus is
unplugged and plugged "live" (i.e. with the power on.)

If you meter the TERMPWR pin on the external connector on the back of
the E40S with everything turned on, and there's no 5v there, that's why
the external plug-in terminator doesn't work.  TERMPWR on a 50-pin
Centronics connector can be found on pin 38.  (Adding the second dead
drive with terminating resistors works because the drive has built-in
terminators and its jumpers are set to provide power to them.)

So if TERMPWR is dead, pop open the E01S and find the TERMPWR fuse,
check it and replace if blown, and all should now be well with the
E40S+external terminator added.  If you don't want to do that, as an
alternative it may be possible to configure the jumpers on the disc in
the E40S to provide TERMPWR.  I had a google for R03000S jumpers but
couldn't find anything.

Finally, I have the FileSnore dealer test disc if you still want it.
