Hazy memory says that's what happens when you try and step the drive faster 
than it can handle, but I could be wrong there.

It's always worth cleaning the heads on old drives, by the way - it's amazing 
how much dirt can build up on them.

For reference, I've got a happily-working Cumana 40/80 drive on the desk here, 
mechanism is a Chinon FZ-506. Jumpers that are set:

   DS0
   TERM
   /MS
   RDY

Jumpers *not* set:

   DKC
   MS
   HL
   IU
   DS1
   DS2
   DS3

... just in case that's useful in tweaking any of the jumpers on yours. 
Actually, throw us the model numbers on your drives if needs be - I think I 
have a few drive manuals kicking around somewhere.
