Subject: Re: MDFS - Hard disc error 98 :(
I have 2 Quantum drives in my MDFS. One is a Quantum Fireball
which is the main disc and occasionally doesn't spin up, but it
usually comes back if I switch off and switch on again.
The other is a Quantum CTS40S which has been on the blink for
some time. It last worked in summer last year and I was hoping
that the warmer weather this summer would have woken it up
again but it hasn't.
List discs in utility mode always reports "Hard disc error B3"
whatever that is, the errors only go up to &83 for Rodimes and
&2C for Adaptec controllers in the manual!
In my experience the MDFS likes to be used and the discs like
to be warm, so if it's been out of service for a while it might be
worth leaving it running for a couple of hours and then restarting
it to see if it comes back to life.
You might also want to check that nothing silly has happened like
the ribbon cable coming loose or the power connector coming
out of the back but make sure you switch off first before unplugging
or re-plugging anything or you might blow the fuse which is what
I did to my first MDFS.
Best wishes,
Ian

Subject: [BBC-Micro] MDFS - Hard disc error 98 :(
Hiya all
A rather sorry tale... having fired up the MDFS to copy something off,
when it wouldn't boot I knew something was up. Having booted from a
floppy, a List discs gave me error 98.
I suspect it's fatal - the Quantum ProDrives weren't known for their reliability
- anyone offer any more insight into it? I can't even try to read the
disc on my linux box, since I gave away all my PC SCSI kit a while back.
Is it worth trying to read anything off the disc, or should I just give
up on it?
Cheers
Chris
