I'm sure that would do the trick, but that's cheating in my book! I
am doing my best to find a purely Acorn solution (MDFS
notwithstanding!!) to this peculiarly Acorn problem.

Hold on.  The Domesday player has a SCSI interface.  Connect it to a
Linux machine with a SCSI card and make a bit-by-bit image of the disc
using dd.
