I avoided MP4 for the three reasons:

1) I wasn't sure if an xVid playback driver existed for RISC OS (whilst I
think Mpegs which will work on just about any platform without requiring
additional drivers)

2) As third party drivers are required, this would further restrict the number
of people who could access them (e.g. if you wanted to watch them at work)

3) If anyone *does* want higher quality versions, they can get uncompressed
MPEG-2 versions from me (just send me the 2 x blank DVD-Rs required and an
addressed jiffy-bag containing sufficient return postage).

But if enough people request it, I may make MP4 versions available, though
they would be xVid, not DivX.

Actually coming to think of it, are you more interested in high quality (in
which case, for each half-hour clip I could generate 350Mb 512 x 384 xVids @
high bit-rate) or do you just want small file-sizes (in which case I'd go with
352 x 288 @ low bit-rates)?

I think you must have missed this bit:

The files *can* be downloaded directly from our server, but I'm only
circulating/promoting the File Hosting links because such large files
have the potential to MURDER the server's bandwidth.

Again. Accessibility issue.

But if I do end up running off some high-quality xVids, I'll probably
end up sticking them on UK Nova or something ...
