My Technomatic hard disc is an Akhter Host Adapter plus
Adaptec ACB4070 bridge board plus Seagate ST225
MFM disc.
According to the Adaptec manual, the ACB4070 is an RLL
controller and not an MFM-and-RLL controller (that's my
understanding of it anyway, but I could be wrong since
it does appear to run contrary to popular belief) so I'm not
sure how wise is it to run it with an MFM drive.
I bought the Technomatic Winchester from 8BS in 2003. It
was the first BBC hard drive I ever owned and I remember
buying it within about 5 seconds of seeing it on the 8BS
website! The hard drive itself could be a replacement but
it has worked reliably for the last 4 years, although it
definitely likes to warm up for about 20 minutes before use
otherwise a lot of disc errors occur.
It was formatted with Superform when it arrived but I can't
say if it would have been originally supplied this way. I
think I saw a brochure for the Technomatic Winchester online
somewhere, if you can root that out it might have more of
the technical information.
Otherwise you can have a look at my one here:

Best wishes,
Ian

Subject: [BBC-Micro] Technomatic hard disk units
Hi all,
Anyone know what the guts of the Technomatic hard drives are? Presumably a
1MHz bus to SASI/SCSI converter, and a SASI/SCSI to ST506 bridge?
Did they come with their own formatter application too? Or did they just use
one of the existing hard disk formatters out there?
ta
Jules
