The input jack is 18VAC which is provided at the expansion connector for
use as a power supply to peripherals, but its not used by the Electron
itself.

The electron's internals actually only make use of +5V and -5V, the latter
being used for the cassette and sound circuits. There may be a 12V line
provided on the expansion connector too, but I can't remember at the
moment.

The +5V and -5V lines come form the electron's PSU board (inside the
electron itself, rather than its power brick). If you are using just a
standard electron, you could probably run it of a power supply as low as
9V.
