Though we really should be letting as few unbuffered 8 bit interfaces into
the wild as possible, particularly as the 16 bit ones allow the IDE identify
command to operate properly.

Hooray - finally the 16 bit interfaces see the light of day. I've just
looked at the photo and it says 25-Sep-2004!
 
I'll reitterate here, incase my private emails to Jonathan got lost in his
groaning inbox, that I'm more than happy to solder the (single) surface
mount diode for anyone for free.

I also hold the 74HCT646 latches in stock (though JGH probably has a stick
of these too)
