Subject: BBC Floppies

Hi,

I have a BBC B, with floppy controller and a floppy drive (Mitsubishi
M4853-112U) in a box labeled "BBC disk drive, Barson Computers".

The only floppies I have are ones previously used with IBM computers.
They are mostly labeled "high density" though there are several labeled
"double density".

When I try to save a program in BBC BASIC the computer tells me "Disk
fault 18 at 00/00".

My questions are, will the BBC/this floppy drive read these disks?
and do I/how do I format them first?

Is it perhaps a matter of the jumpers on the drive? One jumper is set to
"0", another is set to "HS" and another to both "MM" and "IU". Might be
relevant, I don't know what they mean, floppies are before my time,
unfortunately.

If my floppy drive won't read these, will a late model IBM 5 1/4" floppy
drives be compatible?

Thanks,

Tom
