Hmm, I just tried a known-good machine with the serial ULA (IC7) removed, and
it operates fine without it. Now, all the circuitry to do with IC35 *only*
interacts with the serial ULA - which suggests that if your machine's still
causing problems with the serial ULA removed, then the problem lies elsewhere...

Hmm, I think that's a 6850 chip... unfortunately on this machine I have it's
not socketed (perhaps it is on yours).
